THE HOPE SOAP
Edition 2016-019
Welcome to the 19th edition of my regular President's update, The Hope Soap.

A quick update this week with a few things for your attention.

Last Week

At last weeks meeting it was fantastic to hear from Past District Governor, Ross Smith who provided us with an informative presentation on the work his club, and others, have been doing in Fiji over recent years.  Not sure about the shirt though - pink and lime green !

It was also great to share some history as Ross was the District Governor at the time of our club's charter.

Talking of which, whilst we celebrated Rotary's 112th Birthday (23 Feb), last week many of you may not know but on Sunday (26 Feb) it was our own club's 14th anniversary of charter. Happy Birthday to us !

And finally, congratulations were in order for newest member, Wayne Kirby.  Wayne is already heavily involved in planning for our Pride of Workmanship Event (more on that below) so please make sure you make him feel welcome.

This Week

This week's meeting is a Club Assembly and I will be talking a little about some of the resources available on the members section of our website to the various Committees as they plan upcoming events -
  • Club Documents - contains numerous documents, templates and logos including financial summaries from recent major events.  These will help in your planinng.  You should also be considering in your Committee's how to enhance or add to this information for future events.

  • Email Members - particularly for the chairs of each Committee.  This is an easy way to send a group email to members or a group of members.  I'll do a quick demo tomorrow but if anyone needs help they can always ask.

  • Member Resources Page - similar to the documents page but a slightly more visual view of some key documents, particularly club and Rotary logos.

  • Committee Management - for the Committee chairs and the Board this is an easy way to manage both the list of Committees and assign members to each Committee.  You will note that, where you have put your name down already, you will see a list of those you are on at the bottom of this email under 'Commitments'.
We will also be hearing updates from our other various Committees and Board Members.

Dates for Your Diary

In coming weeks (see calendar list below) we will be hearing from a couple of young people we have sponsored to both the RYTS and RYLA programs.  Please come along and give these young people your support and hear more about how these programs influence young lives.

Please place 29 March in your diaries as the date on which we will be hosting a special Pride of Workmanship Breakfast. I know the Committee of Bron, Jill and Wayne have been doing some hard work to plan for this event so it would be great to see as many as possible of you along to help celebrate the work of business people in our community.

A reminder also that on 26 April we will be hosting the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise and we will hear from Hetty Johnston, A.M. For those of you who don't know, Hetty is the founder of the organisation, Bravehearts and a tireless campaigner for child protection.  This will be a fantastic opportunity to hear from a extremely well credentialed guest speaker.

District News

A reminder again of a few important District updates  -
  • District Conference Bookings NOW OPEN ! - The bookings for the District Conference from 5-8 May are now open and can be made via the following link (http://www.rotary9640.org/Stories/registration-is-now-open-for-the-district-9640-conference).  I know a few members have booked already but let's aim to get the highest number of attendees.  Even if you can only stay for some of the time it will definitely be worthwhile !

  • Raising the Spirits Charleville Trip - For those of you who attended District Governor Michael Irving's visit to our club last year you will have heard all about the trip to Charleville undertaken last year under the Outback Links Project to which our club contributed $1,000.  An opportunity to join in the next organised trip to Charleville from 24-31 March is now available.  More details can be found by clicking on this link.  Expressions of interest close on 1 March 2017.

  • Black Tie Charity Dinner for Polio - The Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads is hosting a dinner at the Marriot Surfers Paradise on 18 March 2017 with the aim of raising $100k.  Tickets cost $199 each and are available at goldcoasttickets.com.au. The key note guest speaker for the evening is Olympic Gold Medallist, Steven Bradbury who most of us would remember as the epitome of never giving up.
.. and finally

I hope to see as many of you as possible on Wednesday morning !

Yours in Rotary
