The Rotary Club of
Hope Island
Edition 2016-017
Welcome to the 17th edition of my regular President's update, The Hope Soap.
A quick update this week with a few things for your attention.
Last Week

At last weeks meeting it was great to hear from Ferdinand about life back in Austria.  I am sure those that were at the meeting learnt a lot and it is great to have someone with his experience, along with Kathy and Christoph involved with our Club.  After they return from their upcoming travels fingers crossed we will see more of them around the Club.
As you will have read from Jo-Anne's email to members we raised $481 for the Zephyr Foundation at last weeks dinner at Dragon Cove.  It was great to see so many faces, particularly those of you who are not always able to make it to meetings.  A big thank you to Jo-Anne for her organisation and Sam for assisting with the idea and venue.
This Week

This week we are proud to be able to induct two new members, Diana Dodd and Sue Griffin.  Many of you would have had the opportunity to say hello over the past few meetings or at last week's dinner.  We are also looking to forward to welcoming Wayne Kirby as a new member at next week's meeting. I am sure they will all make great members of our club and great Rotarians - please make them feel welcome.
With no guest speaker this week we will spend a little time on forming the Committees for two of our signature events, the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show and the Charity Golf Day.  Please come along prepared to contribute and share ideas even if, ultimately, you may not be directly involved in either project.
District News
A reminder again of a few important District updates  -
  • District Conference Bookings NOW OPEN ! - As mentioned last week and by Jo-Anne in her email to members this week, the bookings for the District Conference from 5-8 May are now open and can be made via the following link (  I know a few members have booked already but let's aim to get the highest number of attendees.  Even if you can only stay for some of the time it will definitely be worthwhile !
  • Raising the Spirits Charleville Trip - For those of you who attended District Governor Michael Irving's visit to our club last year you will have heard all about the trip to Charleville undertaken last year under the Outback Links Project to which our club contributed $1,000.  An opportunity to join in the next organised trip to Charleville from 24-31 March is now available.  More details can be found by clicking on this link.  Expressions of interest close on 1 March 2017.
  • Black Tie Charity Dinner for Polio - The Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads is hosting a dinner at the Marriot Surfers Paradise on 18 March 2017 with the aim of raising $100k.  Tickets cost $199 each and are available at The key note guest speaker for the evening is Olympic Gold Medallist, Steven Bradbury who most of us would remember as the epitome of never giving up.
.. and finally

I hope to see as many of you as possible on Wednesday morning !
Yours in Rotary
Gareth Hunt
