THE HOPE SOAP
Edition 2016-018
Welcome to the 18th edition of my regular President's update, The Hope Soap.

A quick update this week with a few things for your attention.

Last Week

At last weeks meeting it was great to see Faye and Paul who some of you would remember from the dinner at Dragon Cove visiting us.  Hopefully we will see more of them at coming meetings.

Thanks to everyone who signed up to join the Committees for the two key upcoming events at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show and Golf Day.  Initial meetings of those Committees will be organised soon.

And finally, congratulations were in order for our two new members, Diana Dodd and Sue Griffin.  Please make them feel welcome.

This Week

This week we are proud to be able to induct another new member, Wayne Kirby who is transferring from the Rotary Club of North Perth in WA.

We will be hearing from a fellow Rotarian, Ross Smith of the Rotary Club of Palm Beach this week.  Ross will be speaking with us on his club's support of a project in Fiji.  A quick history lesson is that Ross was the District Governor at the time our club was chartered (February 2003) !

I would also like every member who is on Facebook to make sure that they visit our page ( https://www.facebook.com/RotaryHopeIsland/) and share or like the stories that are posted.  It is a very easy platform to share what we are doing across a broad range of people.

Date for Your Diary

As some of you may know, in recent years we have been holding two joint meetings a year with the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise.  Last year we visited their club to hear from Mat Rogers regarding the Commonwealth Games Volunteering.  On 26 April we will be hosting them and we will hear from Hetty Johnston, A.M.. For those of you who don't know, Hetty is the founder of the organisation, Bravehearts and a tireless campaigner for child protection.  This will be a fantastic opportunity to hear from a extremely well credentialed guest speaker.
District News

A reminder again of a few important District updates  -
  • District Conference Bookings NOW OPEN ! - As mentioned last week and by Jo-Anne in her email to members this week, the bookings for the District Conference from 5-8 May are now open and can be made via the following link (http://www.rotary9640.org/Stories/registration-is-now-open-for-the-district-9640-conference).  I know a few members have booked already but let's aim to get the highest number of attendees.  Even if you can only stay for some of the time it will definitely be worthwhile !

  • Raising the Spirits Charleville Trip - For those of you who attended District Governor Michael Irving's visit to our club last year you will have heard all about the trip to Charleville undertaken last year under the Outback Links Project to which our club contributed $1,000.  An opportunity to join in the next organised trip to Charleville from 24-31 March is now available.  More details can be found by clicking on this link.  Expressions of interest close on 1 March 2017.

  • Black Tie Charity Dinner for Polio - The Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads is hosting a dinner at the Marriot Surfers Paradise on 18 March 2017 with the aim of raising $100k.  Tickets cost $199 each and are available at goldcoasttickets.com.au. The key note guest speaker for the evening is Olympic Gold Medallist, Steven Bradbury who most of us would remember as the epitome of never giving up.
.. and finally

I hope to see as many of you as possible on Wednesday morning !

Yours in Rotary
